Week 0: Pre-semester class preparation

  • Course Administrator lines up faculty, clinicians, company sponsors
  • Students complete necessary clinical certifications (TB test, etc)
  • Identify problem domains

Week 1: Introduction and Orientation

  • Align teams with problem domains
  • Lecture - "Group Dynamics and Brainstorming"

Week 2: Problem Selection

  • Lecture - "Problem Selection Decision Process"
  • Problem sources
  • Team brainstorming - mining and documenting problems

Week 3: Problem Selection (cont'd)

  • Team brainstorming - mining and documenting problems
  • Lecture - "Intellectual Property"
  • Deliverable - 10 problem ideas per team member (40/team) on flashcards

Week 4: Problem Vetting

  • Lecture - "FDA rules and regulations"
  • Team brainstorming - Vetting flashcards to 20 per team

Week 5: Problem Vetting and Fact Sheet Preparation

  • Team brainstorming - Fact sheet write-up assignment
  • Lecture - "Costing, Pricing, and Insurance Reimbursement"
  • Deliverable - 5 fact sheets per team member

Week 6: Team Problem Selection

  • Team brainstorming - Team presentation and Matrix scoring of fact sheets
  • Deliverable - Top four fact sheets per team
  • Lecture - "Manufacturing & Production Issues and Considerations"

Week 7: Team Final Four Submission

  • Lecture - "Market Research Process"
  • Team brainstorming - Refinement of team fact sheets
  • Deliverable - Publish top four fact sheets per team for panel review

Week 8: Panel Midsemester Presentations

  • Presentation of top four fact sheets
  • Panel helps to decide top project option

Week 9: Proposal Development Kickoff

  • Lecture "Proposal Writing"
  • Team brainstorming - Faculty mentoring and WARF pre-disclosure
  • Deliverable - WARF pre-disclosure

Week 10: Proposal Development

  • Team brainstorming - Progress review and comment

Week 11: Proposal Development (cont'd)

  • Team brainstorming - Progress review and comment

Week 12: Proposal Development (cont'd) and WARF Disclosure

  • Team brainstorming - Progress review and comment, WARF full disclosure review
  • Deliverable - WARF full disclosure

Week 13: Proposal Development (cont'd)

  • Team brainstorming - Progress review and comment (as needed)
  • Team brainstorming - Document assembly and style normalization

Week 14: Proposal Submission

  • Team brainstorming - Draft review and comment, Presentation flow and slide development
  • Team brainstorming - Team member sign off and proposal submission
  • Deliverable - Publish final proposals to panel judges

Week 15: Final Presentations to Panel

  • Deliverable - 60 minute presentation per team
  • Panel decisions and opinions on all presentations

Week 16: Post Mortem Review

  • Solicit comments and evaluations from students and panel
